Day in the Life of an Operations Manager

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK operations managers are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day moving operations of the franchise and keeping everything on track. From developing operational processes, training and managing moving crews, and ensuring all operations are running smoothly – the operations manager position takes true multi-tasking ability.

A typical day as A TWO MEN AND A TRUCK operations manager includes the following responsibilities:

Being a lifeline to movers and drivers at all times and making them feel appreciated
Leading the operations team, including staffing, employee development, scheduling, and dispatching move crews
Optimizing truck availability and managing logistics to ensure trucks are being utilized correctly
Managing truck fleet and ensuring franchise is in compliance with DOT and FMCSA guidelines
Staying updated with system happenings and making sure the franchise is optimizing resources correctly
Keeping the morale of the entire franchise staff high and organizing events to improve team culture

What are a few important things that need to be done weekly as a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK operations manager?

“I think it is very important to meet with your staff, whether that’s by department or individually. It is crucial to be on top of everything that is going on throughout the company. It is also equally important to talk with your staff about what is important to them. You need to always treat employees with respect and let them know they are important.”

What are some of the skills you feel are necessary to be successful in this position?

“I think having patience, having a knowledge of human resources and employment laws, and being familiar with DOT compliance laws are very important. Also, having a finance background is very helpful, too!”

What is something unique about this job that people wouldn’t expect?

“I was a former teacher many years ago. There are quite a lot of similarities to my current position and life in the classroom. You are always teaching and encouraging. Sometimes, there are disciplinary or counseling moments, but it’s important to turn them into a learning situation. When you are in a leadership position, be the best person you can be every day. Good practices are reciprocated!”
