A Day in the Life of a Hiring Manager

People quickly point to mover and driver jobs when they think of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, but in reality, it takes several other positions within a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchise to keep the business running smoothly.

One of those crucial roles? A franchise hiring manager/recruiting coordinator, whose main focus is getting talented movers and drivers in the building to round out a franchise team! Hiring managers work closely with both potential and current employees daily, ensuring they get the right people in the door while also making sure those hired receive the proper training and professional development they need to be successful.

Let’s go over what a typical “day in the life” of a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchise hiring manager looks like!

What does a typical day look like?

  • Reviewing background checks
  • Staying up-to-date on labor laws and regulations
  • Checking for new applicants
  • Setting up phone screenings and interviews
  • Assisting the management team in developing training records and professional development plans

“There are very few parts of any business that don’t have some HR component,” said Trent Kissell, HR Director for the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Grand Rapids South, Mich., franchise. “I field questions from all levels of our staff, from simple stuff that can be immediately answered to large project logistics that might take research and follow-up to answer.”

What skills are necessary to be a successful hiring manager?

“Don’t take things personal,” said Adrian Alayoubi, move manager for the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Kissimmee, Fla., location. “You don’t know what a person on the phone is going through when you call them to set up an interview. I say this because a lot of people answer the phone and don’t sound interested, but when you meet them in person, it’s the opposite.”

“Treat your recruits like people. Don’t just hire them and forget about them. Follow up during and after their training, their first move, etc. I’ve found this to positively affect retention rates.”

What do you enjoy about your role as franchise hiring manager?

“My favorite part of the job is meeting people from all different backgrounds and seeing new recruits turn into superstars,” Alayoubi said. “Sometimes, they can turn into great friends outside of work!”

Why would you recommend the franchise hiring manager role?

“I’d recommend this position to someone because it’s very rewarding,” Kissel said. “You get to provide opportunities to people. You get to see those people grow at the professional level. You get to help them through difficult experiences. An HR professional is truly connected with the business and gets to have a voice in the direction of the company.”

“I would recommend this position because you get the real feel of how the company works,” Alayoubi said. “You dip into every position possible. It can lead to great things.”
